What is supposed to happen, is the video card is supposed to negotiate the connection rate, and fall back to the 1.0 standard. According to this article, ATI's solution to compatibility, is to have the video card *start* in PCI Express 1.0 mode, and only advance to 2.0 mode later.

The PROBLEM with Windows XP
For long downloads where I want a more reliable connection I use: AT&F1%C0%E1W1M0 This is almost like the first init string, however it turns off compression (%C0) and configures the modem for fallback mode only (%E1). Fallback mode lets the modem renegotiate a slower connection speed if the line quality gets bad.

would allow for a (preferably hardware-implemented) fallback mode with 160x160 logical pixels which address a 2x2 square each and thus retain full compatibility and usability of existing Palm software. That would be the safest path, but unfortunately nobody makes a screen that's 320 pixels across in that size.

In the past, when you have a problem with Windows, such as it won't launch, freezes, etc., you can always "fall back" on Dos mode to fix things, such as replace a missing or corrupt system file. I have done it. IMPORTANT: You can't use tools that require Windows when Windows will not "run". Now, what do you fall

You then return to the Kickstart prompt and are in 68000 mode - so no problem with games.
